Cavern owners and wives with Miss World

On a previous occasion when Ben E King arrived early for a performance, he was accompanied by three enormous black female backing singers who, if memory serves, were called the Three Tons of Joy. After completing a short rehearsal and sound check at the club, Bob took them for a drink at the nearby Yates’s Wine Lodge in Basnett Street, where they gave an impromptu performance to the absolute delight of the regulars. Their performance that evening with Ben E King went down a storm.

On Saturday 26th November 1966, Ben E King and the Senates appeared at the Cavern, supported by the Joy Strings, Mommie’s Darlings, Signs and Times and the Beechwoods.

Dad and Bob were again moving into the territory of all-night sessions. This would include marathon music nights booked by colleges to raise funds for specific projects. One in particular was for North East Liverpool Technical College in aid of a Sahara expedition. The diverse line-up was a mixture of rock, pop, jazz, Tamla Motown, poetry, disco and even a fashion parade – an amazing cultural medley.
